The Beagle

The Beagle's smaller size can be deceiving.  This dog was bred to hunt, so it needs lots of exercise.  Beagles aren't known for being highly trainable, but they love their families and enjoy lots of attention.  Their short coats don't require much grooming.

Beagles have long been a favorite breed among royalty, and not all were used for hunting.  Queen Elizabeth I had a famous pack of tiny Beagles.   They stood no higher than 9 inches at the shoulder and were so pampered they were carried behind the ladies of the court on horseback during outings.

The first Beagle registered by the AKC in 1885 was named Blunder.   But this dog was no mistake because Beagles quickly became a top breed and have remained so to the present day.
